AMVs good or bad

I used to hate AMVs but I think it's mostly to do with the fact that the animation isn't original. Though I do like AMVs that are made with clips from a fan's favorite anime the vast majority of them are terrible! I've seen a few AMVs made with western or American cartoons.

I wanted to create my own AMVs using animation from my own ideas rather than from my favorite anime because using your favorite in an AMV is too easy and not a good way to improve my skills as an animator.
I do think AMVs that use clips from popular anime are only good to practice editing your timing and nothing else.

So what are your opinions on AMVs. Are they good or are they a waste of bandwidth?
