Caricatures of actors

Post by AmigaMan »

I intend to have caricatures of a few famous actors in my film and I'm not entirely clear of the legalities of this? These are just still images that will be paintings (caricatures) hanging on a wall and are intended as an affectionate tribute.

As I understand it this is fine especially as it's not a photo of the person in question (and even that's probably okay) but thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has knowledge in this area?

Hi Amiga Man.

Funny I just recieved direct advise from an Arts Lawyer on this topic the other day. In Australia, you are allowed to use photographs and depictions of political and famous people in your animations/works as long as it is for the purpose of satire. The animations or works must also not portray the person in a defamatory manner.

Thats it for Australia and I think US is the same.

Cheers

Thanks DK. I think it's probably the same for the UK as I seem to recollect the 'satire' clause. I guess this counts as satire so I should be okay :D
