New Curves in AS 7

Post by Manu »

Despite Smith Micro's best efforts, I managed to get hold of the demo of AS7. First thing I discovered is a cute little tickbox under Vector Layer > Layer Settings window > Vectors > Legacy curves.

When you create a new vector layer, it should default to unticked. The result is curves that look much smoother and natural. For someone like myself who really cares about the design of characters, this makes a massive difference.

I couldn't care less about 3D, Poser imports and voice recording but this one feature makes me think about upgrading.

Could you please show an example of the difference between the two curve types?

Here you are sir. Always happy to oblige.

Just a random shape I drew with the mouse. Copied the layer and switched the left one to "legacy curves". The one on the right uses the new fangled curves. I didn't change anything else between the two.

Hi, I have just uploaded two videos showing the difference between legacy and new curves. I hope they give you an idea.

You can go into preferences and change it to use the new curves for NEW vector layers.

I asked Mike to put in a "global" legacy curve check box that was easier to select so ALL or selected layers could be converted back and forth etc. I don't think there was time to get that in. One of the issues Mike had to deal with was OLD files that would change with the new curves so he has OLD files open with legacy curves checked.

New files should use the new curves by default.
