Bending along the path-I must be missing something

Post by Cefeida »

Quoting an example from another thread...
How do you do this? How do you bend a layer along a path? I've just upgraded from ASP 6 mainly because of this new function and it's driving me crazy that I can't get it to work. The prompt says 'hold <alt> to bend layer' but holding down alt does absolutely nothing. Sure, my layer moves along the path but it stays rigid instead of bending. What am I missing? Is there a ticky box somewhere, an option I need to check before the bending works?

Be kind, help a n00b

It does not work on a straight line. Try making some loops and spirals. Go to frame 0. Click on the layer then click on the follow path tool, hold alt down and click on an end of the line then go to somewhere in the time line, hold alt down and click on the other end of the line. The object will act like jello lol.

P.S. make sure you have the set origin on the object.

Thanks! But it wasn't a straight line, it was curvy enough. I think the problem lies elsewhere.

I figured out part of it- I tried it with a vector file after I saw library items bent just fine, and it turns out I didn't have 'legacy curves' set. But that's not even an option with a PNG layer, and that's what I need to bend around the curve. Please don't tell me that's not possible...

I just tried a jpeg and png, both did not work. Sorry I could not help. Maybe some one else has you solution.

Darnit. If it's only vector files that's useless to me. :(

But thank you for trying to help.

You can use this old How to make a snake creeping technique. It works with images too

Yeah, I know, I saw that one a few weeks ago, it's a great trick, but it would be so much simpler if I could just bend along the path. :( I mean that's why I got the upgrade!

"bending" only works for vectors not image layers. It "bends" the shape based on the points in a vector layer. I just tested and it works fine for me. It doesn't bend image layers though.

I wish that had been clearer in the manual.

Anyone got an idea for a workaround?

Images layers (and even videos) can be bent with the old method of bone warping.

There's a trick developed here on the forum for snake movements:
1. Create a straight line of short bones in frame #0.
2. Rotate those bones in frame #1 to a wave line.
3. Put an image into that bone layer, the origin right on the bone line.
4. Create two keys with the layer translation tool (1) to move that image from start to end of the bone line.
