It is best to check the recommendation provided in the AS manual for how to use 3D files, even the seasoned users have some trouble inthis area.

I am by no means an expert in this area, but I will state what I know. AS is a 2D program. It can import 3D files in .OBJ format, and has some limited 3D capabilities. So importing a 3D Studio character and expecting it to be animatable in AS is a non-starter. I'm sure people who know better will be able to give you more information!
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

AS7 has Poser rigged characters integration, not 3dmax. Having Poser installed is the only way to make a 3d rigged character working on AS.
Anyway, AS is a 2d specialized software and its 3d features are basic, so think them as an useful help to solve some stuff easily, not as if AS were a software for 3d animation.
You can import obj files too. And you can put AS bones on them, but don't expect you can make something too fancy. If you want 3d with great lighting, rendering and complex riggs, it's better you keep using 3dmax or another specialized software.

Thanks, everybody. I will try that .obj format and see what happens.
