Selecting a layer with a shortcut?

Is there a shortcut key or shortcut + mouse click to select a different layer. Photoshop has this ability and it really speeds things up. In photoshop you hover over the object and press Ctrl + L mouse click. The layer with the object your mouse is over is selected.

You can do this with the select layer tool by synthin75 but it has some limitations:
