OBJ files don't display correctly for me

Post by braj »

I am wondering what I am doing wrong, all the obj models that I have exported from Sketchup display as simple flat items that look nothing at all like the original. It doesn't seem to matter at all how simple or complex, just I can't seem to get it to work.

You probably should use the auto-scale script authored by Mike Clifton.
I give some details here: http://www.kelleytown.com/forum/animato ... hichpage=5

Ack! It appears Sketchup won't allow me to export OBJ files any longer anyhow, I guess this is pretty irrelevant for me now. Regardless, I still have issues importing, I tried this one and AS just freezes and crashes.

You may try setting shading to smooth, unchecking silhouettes, materials and creases in the 3d options within the layer settings window.

Yeah I've tried every option that is there but no luck. Models specifically made for AS work, but otherwise no luck. I am now wondering about Poser and if an older version would work for me. There is no demo but Poser 9 is under $70 at Amazon. Since I'm primarily interested in set design in 3d I'm not sure if it would work. It would be better than using SketchUp though if it works since I wouldn't need to do editing in another app or two before using the content in AS.

May bee this could help, I have not tried it cause use max to make my obj's, but this script is for su7, dont work in 8 or above, http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtop ... 23&t=33448
Is that how you export obj from su? If not install su7 and put that plugin in the script folder and see if it works.

Editing because tried above and works, made basic model in su7, used above exporter, and opened in as, looks great

That's a great help, I can now make a box in SU and AS renders it as expected, as far as I can tell so far. Thanks for the suggestion.

Does AS support transparencies in obj models? My imports don't show that but I don't know if it is simply the export script in SU. Anyhow, the script is marvelous and I don't know what the issue is with other OBJ models, but this gets me what I needed, much thanks again.
