Background Music Suggestions?

Hi guys,
So, quick question for you: Aside from the occasional transition, when is music appropriate in an animated cartoon that's "sitcom-y", and how much would you use?

I've come to feel that having no music in the background for a multi-minute animation seems too plain, particularly if there isn't really any ambient sound FX, but I'm not sure which parts would really benefit from music either.

Thoughts?
