Can't answer this without knowing your style. Every artist works in a different way.

Re: which is best tool add point tool or free hand tool
I like the control of putting points in one by one with the point tool personally...
Maybe this should be a poll - "Do you use the point tool or freehand tool to create most of the time?" - I suspect the answer will be the point tool

Re: which is best tool add point tool or free hand tool
First off, I am an "old school" type artist deep down in my heart. I grew up with and learned with traditional media, long before desktop computers were more than a dream in young Steve Jobs subconscious.
I like pencils and paper. I actually miss the good old days of prismacolor markers, colored pencils, paints and brushes (french curves, rapidographs and drawing snakes! Those were the days).
So you might think I would vote for the freehand tool, but no. For Anime Studio my vote is the "point by point" add point tool method. Either tracing a drawn shape or just drawing from scratch in AS.
The free hand tool is okay for quick "rough sketching", but the point count, and placement can't be controlled well enough for final animation and rigging, which still requires the same effort to "get it right" as if I drew it point by point in the first place. I found that trying to freehand and then fix the result was double the effort. There was too much time wasted. Sketch quick any way you can then trace it.
Anime Studio's strength is requiring a minimum of points to get great animation. Because you don't need a bazillion points it's so easy to just "click click click" to get the shape. Using the freehand tool tries to "match" the stroke you drew, which can create too many points. After years of using it, and based on the style I like, I find the best and fastest way to draw is to use the add point tool.
If I do need to draw with the freehand tool in Anime Studio, I don't use the resulting vectors. I will sketch fast and rough, and then trace this sketch on a new layer. This is faster then deleting, moving and reconnecting the points drawn with the freehand tool. Also when sketching fast and rough in AS this way, I don't care how many "extra lines" I end up with or how they connect etc. It's only reference. In most cases I sketch on paper scan and trace, or sketch in Photoshop import and trace.

Re: which is best tool add point tool or free hand tool
I use whatever I need. Often I start with a basic shape, a circle or rectangle, and add some points to tweak it. Or I draw freehand, with some tweaking later. I don't agree with Vern, I think this is fast enough, at least not any slower than it was in Freehand or Illustrator. If I need something more sketchy I turn to TVPaint anyway.

I don't think I've ever used the Freehand Tool. As vern says, draw your designs in your favourite drawing software and then trace it using the Add Point Tool in Anime Studio.
This is the way to do it....
