Shadows not working

I'm trying to put a drop shadow under a layer. It worked once but now I can't get it to happen again.
I double click the layer, go to shadow tab, click it on and as soon as I hit apply it unchecks it.

Also, I've got a couple of shadow keyframes in the timeline. One at frame zero and one at frame one. Same thing for a layer shading keyframes. I'm trying to delete them but they just stay there.
Don't know if that's a related problem.

Have you checked "animated layer effects" first?
