moving from room to room

Post by sabina »

Hi; I'm wondering if there is a way to start with the scene in one room, then the scene moves through a doorway and into another room, as though the camera had followed my charactor. I want the second room to be as visible as the first room (not just the charactor disappearing out the door). Any tips? Thanks in advance ~ Sabina

It is possible, but it is also very complex scene setting. Do you realy have to do that? That kind of shots is considered dificult even in movies and it`s not that ease to make it work/look right.

First, you`ll need a kind of 3D enviroment (in order to achieve the feel of moving trough the rooms - which is elaborated in several threads on this forum) and for camera - use Track Camera tool (which has several useful options in it`s toolbar / i.e. Show path - which would help you manage the movement). Don`t forget to enable Rotate to face camera for character(s) and other stuff in the shot.

Hope this helps, since I would like to see how you done it.

Everything Maestral has said, i agree with.
The closest thing I have done to this that I have on hand is this window fly-in...

Of course the camera could keep going through the door into the next room. (Though there isn't actually anything in the next room in mine)
You'd want to extend your 3d environment beyond the door and into the next room and just track forward into that space. But you really need to play around with camera settings to get it just right, as being very close to rotated layers can cause some pretty extreme perspective angles.

And building 3D spaces can be a lot of work, especially if this is only for one shot.

***EDIT*** Hmm, video just went to black when I tried to play it. Not sure if that happens for anyone else. If so, maybe the full link will work. Anyone know why the embed might not be working?

Or move the room past the camera... For example lock the camera at its default position, have two or more vector layers (or groups) stacked at default z then, to move from the top of stack to the next in sequence, translate the top of stack in z towards then past the camera lining up the 'hole' with the camera x,y and resize / reposition the second to give the right feel if necessary (especially if the hole is not at 0,0). Or resize / translate in x,y top of stack to make it look as though it's flying towards camera. Or combine the two approaches. I've used this a few times when the full 3d environment wasn't needed. In animation you can move the world if it's in the wrong place for the shot.

Thanks for all the great replies! I'm going to see if I can do this. Ddrake, your video opened fine. It's really well done, thanks for the inspiration :) ~ Sabina

That is a darn good point. Especially if you aren't crazy about using the camera movements. And it's not just animation. All reality is determined by the relative position of the observer. :) Guess it comes down to the shot, and which things (and how many) are easier to move.

There's no need for complicated 3D stuff. Just create 2 rooms side by side, put them into a group layer, and move this when necessary. You can add another layer with the wall on top and move it where needed.

(Some aside: Recently it seems people get more obsessed with 3D and "correct" perspective. I recommend they take a look at films by John Hubley and the like, to get over this obsession and create stuff much more freely.)

Exactly and i also agree with everything Maestral has said. Yes one would want to extend the 3d environment beyond the door and into the next room and tract forward to that space playing around with camera setting is necessary in it.
In that video ddrake you have done really impressive thing.
