Head turns + smartbones dials 4 character made in v. 7

If you had an AS character made in AS7 (or 8) and you wanted to add face turns, smartbone dials, etc. what would you do? would you simply build it from scratch in AS11?
I'm asking because I have one such a character, and I come accross all kind of problems with the smarbones and head turns, points moving when they shouldn't, layers spread all over various sections of the character and making it incredibly difficult to make a face turn, etc. as I have to navigate through lots of sub-layers to find the right one when I create an action, etc.
