How to make a character write something?

let's say you wanted a character to write something with a pencil,pen,marker or any writing tool
Is there a way to do this with masking or stroke exposure?
should whatever is written be in a different layer?
Any ideas or suggestions?

P.S I am an Anime Studio Pro 9 user

Sorry if this may seem a bit too direct but did you actually try to look it up ?

I mean, you basically gave the answer in your question and doing a simple search in google on "stroke exposure anime studio pro" gives you plenty of movies showing you how to do this ... also on older versions.
