I just read through that thread. Wow, a lot sure has happened since 2017. According to the posts there, that was when Mike and Victor were separated from Moho by Smith-Micro..and now Smith-Micro is out of the picture, and Mike, Victor and Moho are back together. Those were sad times for Moho users and I'm so glad things worked out! :D

BTW, the show I was talking about in that thread was Boss Baby: Back In Business, and I still think this show featured some of the best work we did with Moho. You can see some of the work on my 2019 demo reel linked below.

Since then I've used Moho in a few episodes of Fast & Furious: Spy Racers. When I have time, I'll put together a new demo reel with more fun Moho stuff.

Re: the original thread topic, you can work in almost any genre or style with Moho. Moho is a powerful creative tool and it's up to you how you want to use it.

I particularly like this one animated by Believe.tv using Moho

PS: Interesting thread. It feels like 50 years since 2017!

I get itchy with questions like this, mainly because they confuse some categories. What does "hand-drawn" mean in this context?

The same as frame-by-frame? In that case use a dedicated FBF-program like TVPaint.

Or should that be "looks like real pencil strokes"? In that case, use Moho's brushes and creat your own.

Or just a general "cel animation" look? Well, Moho can surely do that.

If it means" can Moho completely replace a team skilled FBF animators", then the answer would be No, whatever marketing says and whatever Victor and all the other extremely skilled Moho animators can pull off (sorry).

One needs to sort out graphical style, production design, style of animation, way of storytelling, and finally decide on something in each of these fields - and then see which combination of different software will achieve this in the workflow. Large scale productions will have an overall design, then decide which software to use on a scene-by-scene or even character/movement base (that's what Cartoon Saloon does).

Or work the other way round: see what Moho can do and what not, see where it's really easy to apply, and work out a style of movements and visuals which comes natural to it. Series often work like this, mostly because studios have invested in a certain suite of software and now want it to be used in every production.

I think you can achieve any animation style with any software and technique. The thing is that depending on the program and technique you use, some tasks will be easier and others will be harder. That is what ends defining the style trend of a technique and a program, but it is just a natural trend that you are not forced to follow. Some people will abuse that trend to be efficient sacrificing the result, but talented and experienced animators will know how to be efficient without sacrificing their vision too much.

For example: Incredibly well made lip sync with very fluid animations can be easily achieved with moho sub-layer interpolation, and that's why you see that a lot in productions made with it. Even good things like that can be subjectibly bad if you are looking for a different style, like a more anime look. Fluidity is excepcionally easy to achieve with Moho in general, but it is not hard to avoid, you just desactivate the sub-layer interpolation or reduce the frames.

Right now it is not very efficient to draw directly in Moho, and at the same time Moho is the best program at making the most use of a single drawing by using bones, meshes, etc. I think that's why there is also a tendency to overuse single drawing scenes with bone and mesh animation, but of course you can avoid that. Moho recently made easier to avoid that with the introduction of vitruvian bones. But what still needs a lot of work to make drawing in Moho efficient is the Freehand tool and the graphic tablet support. That will directly change Moho's animation tendencies for the better.

As an example, the movie La Reine Soleil doesn't overuse single drawings or poses. The characters are really dynamic, using a lot of poses and perspectives that are natural tendencies of FBF styles. And at the same time, some scenes look exceptionally fluid, particularly the lip-sync of some scenes, and sometimes the blinks of the eyes. If they wanted to go for a full FBF look they could have avoided that.

I think it can be done, I tried to do something similar recently. I know I have to improve but I'm sure it can be done.

Here is an animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcyorA0TS4U

 Or, you should look at [Art Style] and [Software Function] separately.

Japanese animation is a huge industrial system with a fixed art style. They have spent decades exploring and perfecting animation styles and production techniques. They are absolute FBF. If you like Japanese animation, then what you like is [Japanese art style + BFB technology].[Japanese art style] is a matter of art, and [BFB technology] is a matter of production.

In terms of function, Moho is completely competent for Japanese animation. But for those who use Moho, do you have the FBF capabilities of Japanese animation?

If you're a good Japanese animator (or have similar abilities), you can use Moho to make Japanese animations, no problem at all.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And most of the Moho animations you have seen are European and American art styles?

Because most Japanese animators stick to the Japanese BFB tradition, they are very proud and stubborn. Even if they use 3D software, they don't try the Moho technology in 2D. I've approached the employees of Japanese animation companies and that's what they said.

Maybe younger Japanese animators will try Moho, and it will take a long time~~~
