First look at My Father's Dragon (Netflix, soon)

Post by Víctor Paredes »

Hello. Today we finally had an official announcement and some information about My Father's Dragon, the movie made by Cartoon Saloon and directed by Nora Twomey.
I have been working on this movie for more than two year and this is the final week for 'the Moho team'.

I'm very excited we are finally getting close to the end and soon you will be able to watch the movie!
Even when the movie is mostly hand-drawn, we made a lot of things with Moho during this production, from environmental animation, props, texturing, crowds, tonals and some FX to tiny characters and full characters.
Actually, many of the movie characters are fully made in Moho. And other, including the main characters, are made in Moho for several scenes.

The movie is huge and there are several departments using different techniques and software, so our main goal was to create good quality rigged animation that could live with the rest of the movie in the same world.

I also want to give credit to the Moho team here :D . You probably know some of the names already: Regis Rodríguez, Ahdieh Modarres, Mansour Moawad, Kim Kelly, Pierre Gombaud and Dave Cockburn. They are amazing artists (plus extremely nice people) and I really hope you can see their beautiful work soon.

Very excited for this as well! I was obsessed with these books as a kid (and even made a very half-assed attempt to figure out how to buy the rights to this book in the early 2000's). Was curious to see if the artwork for the movie would have any influence from the original illustrations:

I sure do hope that this is still on track. I heard rumors that Netflix Animation was going through some financial struggles right now and that unfortunately, works already in progress were being cancelled and/or shelved. Been looking forward to this one. Hopefully we will all get to see it soon Victor.

The Netflix financial issues probably affect main new and future projects and current Netflix staff. As for currently active productions, it probably affects shows in pre-production. It would be very costly to shut down a show already in full production, not to mention potentially exposing Netflix to legal problems with the individual studios and production companies.

My Father's Dragon has been in production for quite some time and is close to release. I'm almost certain it's not affected.
