Pin Bone Size Is Too Large

Post by shubi »

Hi,
I am trying to work with pin bones, but for some reason they appear too big for my rig. I found an old post referring to this but no answers yet. Is there a solution, or am i doing something wrong here?

which moho version are you on?
the latest has an option in

edit > preferences > layers/objects tab > "bone display width" dropdown.

If you have "narrow" selected, that's as small as it gets; if not ...

Got it, thanks!

But is there a way to scale the pin bone like other bones? Can we request it somewhere for future update?

On that note is there an update on what new features are being planned, and when it would release.... New to the forum, noob question..

"scale" on a regular bone does, indeed, appear to change its length - but this is a multiplier in its initial length. And it doesn't change the display width.
a pin bone has a zero length; so scaling it won't change the length.

two things, then:
If you want the pin bone to influence a larger area - use bone strength: the display size of a bone is far less important than the scope of artwork that it controls. That's where the bone strength (tool "S") comes in. If you animate the bone scale, this "drags" the zone of bone influence with it (but you can't see that outside frame 0) [There are also point / layer binding options which I'll skip over for now.] All bones have bone strength. You can make it 0 or more.

If you're just concerned about selecting a bone from amongst a clutter, you can make bones around it "shy" (this thread goes into that a bit more: https://www.lostmarble.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35636)

Anyone who has the knowledge to answer that question is contractually bound NOT to answer that question. So anyone who DOES give you an answer is just guessing / hoping.

Scaling Pin bones will scale/multiply its Size and that of the area of influence (assuming it has strength), and unlike normal bones - does so uniformly in both X and Y directions.

Yeah, this is one of my long-standing wishlist items, to be able to change the visual display size of the Pin Bone the way I want.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to re-size the display size for any Pin Bone on any frame, independent of its strength or range size, and separate from the display size of regular bones. I think the Pin Bone's range of influence could be indicated by a transparently colored range like how bone strength is indicated by the transparent red pill shape.

@SimplSam, I was wondering, can your Virtual Bones script address this? I've been meaning to try it for this purpose but never got around to it. Maybe I can make time for it later today.

Potentially. Essentially it creates vectors and point binds them to bones - so you can create over/undersized Pin bone representations, but the real bone is still required for animating.

p.s. It is due an upgrade as the default bone sizes no longer match the new skinny bones.
