Copy or reference a hand that has a smart bone action

Post by Realville »

I have a hand that I made that has a smart bone so it can rotate 360. Is there a way for me to copy or make reference of the hand so I can use it on the other side without having to redo the smart bone?
Thanks for your help

In the past, I would save the rig into its own project, rename the actions for the hand and bones, then flip it. Then it becomes possible to import the edited setup to the original project without causing a conflict with the original.

Note that it's important to preserve the bone hierarchy for the hand...specifically, the angles of any parent bones and Smart Bones. You can directly re-parent the bones to the original after import, just don't completely unparent them or parent them to bones with different rotations before you do that.

For example, unparenting the Smart Bone Dials is likely to break the control's rotation values. This is not a huge deal but it's extra work to fix and can be annoying. Best to just duplicate all the bones and preserve the hierarchy and rotations...you can always delete the extra bones after reparenting.

The above method works well without scripts but these days I like to use this tool: MR Transform Rig

Scrub to 2:04 for a detailed explanation. This is an advanced tool but once you get the hang of it, it's a lot easier to use than the manual method.

Hope this helps.
