Animation preference (Image or Splines)

Post by KidMesh »

Hello all first post 8)

I've been getting familar with the toolset and going over the tuts. Now I have a questions for the veterans of the software.

Which do you all prefer and why? Pro's & Con's etc.

Animating by boning the images or drawing directly in AS itself? Personally I can see the advantages by drawing directly into AS but I guess I'd like to here from the guys and gals that have actually been using the software.

Thanks for your time in advance,

Cheers

I've got both AS and Toon Boom -- if I'm going to fraw anything directly into the software, I'd always choose Toon Boom over Anime Studio. One of the main strengths of AS is the bones system, but I prefer to draw elsewhere (usually Xara Xtreme), and then import them and clean them up in AS.
I always think of drawing in AS as arranging weights on a water bed! Can be fun, but it's amazing how quickly it stops being fun...Great software, but distinctly average drawing tools, and poor sound facilities. Every piece of software has its drawbacks, though, and I'm sure development with eFrontier is the right way for old Moho to go.

You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

I quite agree on the sound, as I'm sure a lot of other users would agree as well. I hope the sound system is one of the first things on the "fix it/enhance it" list... Using a single sound track makes it difficult to really plan out and use dialogs, music, etc... I know everybody's advice is to do it in post production in another app, but having the sound there while animating, and adjusting as necessary would make it far easier to do as much in AS as possible before using other editors for post production. Impossible to do with a single sound track? Absolutely not. But is a single sound track convienent? Absolutely not...

I don't prefer one over another, I'd rather choose the best program for the task. Usually I use a combination of tools, Moho, Mirage, Flash, Photoshop (of course!), After Effects, and even Director. If I ever need to do morphs again, I could even dig out Elastic Reality ...

I use both AS and TBS, both great tools.

I prefer using splines in AS, rotoscoping from images..because the output is pixely with images when you need to zoom in to something

I see thanks for the replies guys. Patmals hit on something though in regards to the zooming in on images becoming pixelated. That is something I want to avoid. Hmmm...well the best teacher is experimentation so we will see how it goes

Thank you!

Though, Toon boom is easy to draw with, but thats more a pencil and ink type of animation software for traditional animators.

However i like using the add points tool over the pencil tool in AS..i think it makes too many points with the pencil
