Time-lapse photography

Post by Rhoel »

Some of the forum users will known my background is animation camera. That includes filming time-lapse. Recently I have been working with digital SLR cameras to shoot high definition video.

I am using a Nikon D70s rig hokoed up to Nikons Capture 4 software. This means I have remote control of most of the camera functions from the computer. The best part is I can pre-set the time interval then go eat, sleep or whatever, knowing the computer is looking after the shooting and exposures, downloading the images to the computer etc.

Converting the images to a video sequence is a little time consuming but straight forward - I am using Combustion 3 to downscale the 3008 * 2000 pixel originals to the 1920 * 1080 size used in HDTV.

To get the video onto the web, I use Riva Encoder 2, (free) to make the FLV flash video files. Compression is an astonishing 1000:1, 500M ending up at 500K. The HDTV files are all Gigabyte sized, the web files less than 2 megs.

The DSLR/computer control system can also be used extremely well for shooting HD Claymation - the Nikon's optics are A1 and if you pay attention to the lighting, Wallace and gromit will be worried about the competition - I know 'cos I have seen the results of a test shoot ... makes you wonder why anyone used Maya.

Okay, here is the link to material I've shot in and around Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Now the dust has settled from the coupe last week, I can go back to shooting some new material.

Chiang Mai HD video clips

Enjoy,

The cloudscapes look really nice.
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
