OpenEXR is Industrial Light and Magic's 16-bit/32-bit open source file format, one which ILM now used for all its in-house productions. Features such as Harry Potter and Men in Black II used this HRI (high-dynamic Range Image) codex.
It's been picked up by many of the big SFX players and other facility houses, and by open-source film software including CinePaint. Blender also uses this format.
The open source code and other info is available at www.openexr.com.
Its big attraction is the bit depth and high dynamic range. in easy-speak, it means you can tweak it a lot more in post-production than other formats. The inclusion of this high grade output will make AS-5 attractive mainly to to studios and commercial users, though independents wanting to generate serious output for festivals or HD-DVD will find it a very big bonus.
Folks might want to look at the CinePaint site and download the free software.
