Make a separate shape for each leg. If your two legs form one big uninterrupted vector path, you may need to add a few vector lines to split that into two vector paths. Remove the previous shape, and re-apply a shape for each leg. If the lower and upper part of the same leg cross, you may have to do the same with the upper and lower parts of both legs.

Here's a trick I use when I don't want to have to figure out the shape fill styles for the new split shapes.

Leave the shape as is. Don't remove it. Add in the extra spline to create a separate shape for the other leg. Create that shape and use the key command to copy the shape fill from the existing larger shape (it's the option key on the mac with the shape select tool. Don't know off hand the Win key command).

NOW delete the big shape and create a new shape for the other leg and copy the fill from the other one in the same way.

I often have some complex fill styles using multiple effects from a style and applied directly. This way I don't completely lose that shape style when splitting it into smaller parts.
