problem with joints - jordanek's way

Post by starchild »

hi guys.

I was trying out jordanek's simple and efficient way to do joints,

(here: viewtopic.php?t=4970&postdays=0&postord ... er&start=0)

and was excited about it... but maybe I'm a little lost on the concept...

for example: for this character I'm building, his arm looks like this:

Image

but whenever I setup everything and try to move it, the "back" of the arm, near the joints, suffer:

Image

the joint here became a straight line, and that's not what i was looking for...i was expecting a more smooth, curved arm. the "front" of the arm looks fantastic, it bends well and stuff... but this "straight line-looking" joint on the 'back' is annoying me.

I'm using region binding (but the problem is also present if i use flexible)! i've followed all the tutorials and even so couldn't found an answer to what would be the best solution. the bones are associated correctly to the respective points of the 2 shapes. At least I hope so.

any tips, suggestions, ideas?
thanx very much![/img]

If you look at the bone strength it is moving ALL the points up to the middle joint area.

You need to overlap the bone strength of each bone so they share influence over the points. Don't use point binding!!! If you bind points to those two bones you won't get a smooth joint.

You could use point binding if you had a set of "fan" bones that were assigned to each point around the joint, but this is unnecessary.

You may want to eliminate a lot of the points on that shape. There are way more than you really need. You should have points on either side of the middle point right at the tip of the elbow.

You're welcome! Anytime!

All I ask is that you just put in a good word for me with your favorite deity. I am trying to cover all the bases just in case. You can never be too sure right?

;) ;)

Hi there,
I know this may seem obvious, but despite quoting jordanek's system, it doesnt seem like youve made any attempt to rig it in the same way.

Firstly you need to simplify your points - you have 5 points defining a curve you could achieve with 1 point...

Secondly you have to rig the bones like he has -><-, i'd actually never seen his post before so thanks for pointing it out! I did a quick test from scratch last night in about 2 minutes, and it worked pretty damn well even with flexi-binding - i just had to reduce all bones influence...

Although reading on it says you dont NEED the fan bones, so maybe you have set your layer to region binding and your bone influence isnt big enough? try increasing the influence...

good luck. :)
