Drawing folded wings

Post by znihil »

How to draw wings in anime studio? Wings that fold. I was thinking something about using masking for the top(green) and bottom(yellow) part of the wings, but I'm not sure how to make it work.

If you look to the ear I did for the giraffe you can observe that it could be adapted to a bird's wing.

How I did it:

1) Create tour model in one vector layer. Draw as many shapes you need to represent the wing from the points of view you need (draw the shapes of the front and back parts of the wing at the same place). Remember to break the shapes into two halves minimum to allow see both parts of the wing at the same time when it is bent. give names to every shape, It would help.
2) Once you're happy with the model place it (or just do it from the beginning) inside a switch layer.
3) Create actions on the vector layer (or the switch layer) that allow you bend the wing to make it turn. You can do it for example for a front position to a 1/2 bent position and later for a 100 turned position, and so on. Create almost 6 or 8 states for the wing (6 or 8 actions called front, front-up, front down, down-back, back, and so on). To figure out that you can change the position of the shapes to let show each shape in a proper place for each orientation.
4) Once you have your set of states (let say you have 8 states) then figure out how many shape orders represents all the possible states of the wing. For example order of front and front-down states can have same shape order. So imagine you have 6 shape order needed for your 8 position of the wing.
5) Duplicate the wing layer as many times you need from the previous step. As well as they are inside a switch layer , only one is shown. This step would be done at the end of the design. If you want to modify an action then you need to go to repeat this step again deleting the vector layers less the original one.
6) To use the setup just insert the actions and insert switch keyframes properly to match the above calculations.

See my example of the ear to achieve this.
Good luck. It is not a newbie task.
