After you've checked Avi in AS, What codec's do you have available in your export animation list?

None... There is only one to choose, and I think it is the uncompressed one :\

Sorry i don't use Vista yet but this info suggests you should have no problem with the K lite codec:

KLite Mega Codec Pack description
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - Everything needed to play online and offline computer media
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a collection of codecs, DirectShow filters and tools.
Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats.

The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is designed as an user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. With K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even some rare formats.

Mega Codec Pack includes everything needed to play online and offline computer media. This pack is from the makers of the K-lite codec pack.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the Full K-lite codec pack as well as Quicktime and Realplayer codecs and BS Player. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes codecs for the most popular compressions like Divx and Xvid as well as some of the less popular but still necesary codecs. This is
your one stop codec resource.
