The better the drawings the better the animation is. But there are great animations with average/poor drawings.
Also, for the sanity of the animator and the quality of the final result, drawings should be designed for animation, specifically for the scene that is being done. Some cautions taken at initial design stage will save a lot of time during the animation process.
Anyway I know that your "beginner animation knowledge" is enough to foresee those tricks
