Variety on "The Solar Princess"

This is a good and also very favorable review of "The Solar Princess" (La Reine Soleil).

I must add a little something here, though...

I am not a reader of Variety, so I was unprepared for its pseudohipster approach to journalism.

First, understand that journalists as a whole routinely engage in a telegraphic butchery of our language, but normally this is relegated to that truncated, telegraphic excuse for syntax which graces headlines.

Variety, by contrast, repeatedly starts paragraphs with "Pic does X or Y," which translates to: "This film does X or Y"

A variant is "Toon does X or Y."

And what ordinary film reviewers would call "a set piece" is referred to here--howlingly--as "memorable razzle-dazzler."

It's the cat's pajamas, old bean!

(No mention, of course, of Anime Studio...)

Hmm, why did they call it "Princess"? Reine means "Queen". Was going to also question the use of the word "Solar", but I don't see that in the article.

Aha, Well, for "princess," I was following a translation for the movie title that floats around the web.

Blame the "Solar" on me, tho... it was my take on how it ought to be translated...

but as we've just seen. I don't know very much....

I believe it literally translates to: "The Sun Queen".

My wife's french and even though I don't quite speak french, I've managed to pick up on bits and pieces here and there. Without the benefit of her knowledge as I type this, I think that's what I think it translates to.

To me, "The Sun Queen" sounds a lot more appropriate to an Egyptian context than "The Solar Princess".

Sorry, I didn't read the rest of the posts here.

Anyway although it's a positive article, I find it to be very poorly written. "Pic does X or Y" is a vernacular that should be absolutely scrapped -what are they trying to do: communicate or be cool? I've never read Variety before but the writing 'style' of this article has merely served to 'counter-sell' me on further readings from Variety.

Being french(canadian) and all, maybe I can shed some light

"La reine soleil" is a tad difficult to translate, in general terms it means "the sun queen", sort of, meaning that she is, or rather will be the future queen of egypt under the sun god, again, sort of. Do not forget that a princess that is crowned becomes a queen, no matter her age!

Yeah reading that 'pic' and 'toon' makes me think the editor just never got around to putting in the actual names. If that is standard for them, then they're just morons.
